
10 Art Classes for Kids & Teens, for FREE at VECCA!
Valley Educational Center for the Creative Arts (VECCA) is pleased to offer 10 Alive With Art workshops for FREE! 5 classes for kids (age 6 to 12 or current grade K to 7th) and 5 classes for teens (age 13-17 or current grade 8th to 12th). These classes happen at 123 S Main Street, Woodstock VA, on their respective dates. Class size is limited to ten students; after this limit is reached, VECCA will maintain a waitlist for prospective students.
For Kids
Found Art
A Celebration of Earth Day

- 9:30 am - 12:00pm
Many creative artists draw inspiration from the natural world. On Earth Day, kids are invited to explore several examples of found art, from environmental art to art made from repurposed items, and even block-out poetry. This will be a day appreciating the Earth and exploring unique ways to create and to share art together. No experience needed.
Hands-on Pottery

- 1:00 - 4:00pm
Hands-on Pottery, an Alive With Art for Kids class, explores creativity with clay. Students will learn hand-building and wheel-thrown techniques from local potter, SENK. All pieces will be underglazed and ready for pick-up approximately 3 weeks after the class. No experience needed; all supplies provided. 3-4 hour class. There will be a rain date option, in case of inclement weather.
Hand Sewing with Yarn

Hand sewing is a valuable skill and fun to learn when creating your own rice hand warmer or small stuffed animal. This Alive With Art for Kids workshop uses large plastic needles and yarn to create a fabric art toy that you can take home. All supplies provided. No sewing experience needed. 3-4 hour class
Community Drumming for Kids

A drumming circle is a gathering of individuals in which the rhythm of the drum offers healing, connection, and inspiration within a community setting. Community Drumming with Kids is a fun and dynamic way to appreciate music and express yourself. A selection of djembes, hand drums, and other percussive type instruments will be available for use. No experience needed.
SpillArt
Fun with Painting

SpillArt, fun with painting, is an Alive With Art for Kids workshop taught by local artist, Penelope Carroll. Using non-toxic paint, children are invited to explore the creative side of art through colorful paint splatters, which they turn into characters or worlds they imagine, much like finding images in a cloud or a Rorschach. Paired with story-telling, students will create short poems or stories about their SpillArt. No experience needed; all supplies provided. 2-3 hour class

Layering & Burnishing with Colored Pencils

Pencils are ubiquitous to school – you use them every day. But, they are also a wonderful medium for artistic expression. In this Alive With Art for Teens class, you’ll learn how to take your colored pencil art to the next level with layering and burnishing. Students will draw a Converse sneaker, incorporating tips from local artist, Ann Richman. No experience needed. 2-3 hour class.
Creative Stitching
An Intro to Hand Sewing

In this Alive With Art for Teens workshop, learn the basics of hand sewing by creating a pencil pouch or pull-string bag and a decorative pillow case. The foundational skills learned in this class can be used for a lifetime of making and mending. All supplies provided. No sewing experience needed. 3-4 hour class
Basic Acrylics
Mural Design & Creation

Interested in learning how to create a mural? In this Alive With Art for Teens workshop, instructor Rachel Fitzsimmons will teach the basics of painting with acrylics. You’ll learn about composition, mixing colors, and color theory – and employ these in designing and painting a group mural. No experience needed. 4-5 hour class.

Anthotype Imagery

Patterns abound in nature, founding basic principles in mathematics. Yet, they are much more than numerical, patterns are also sources of inspiration to the human spirit. This Alive With Art for Teens workshop gives students a chance to capture patterns in nature through the alternative photographic method of anthotypes, which uses berries, leaves, and other plant sourced materials to produce eco-friendly art. Student will also learn about cyanotypes. No experience needed. 2-3 hour class.

VECCA strives to provide quality classes taught by professional creative artists, mostly from the local area. All children’s classes have a two-deep policy, meaning that at least two adults will be present with the children at all times to promote a positive experience and personal safety.
Parents and guardians, please provide basic information regarding the student that will be participating in an upcoming workshop.
VECCA, which is run completely by unpaid volunteers, strives to be professional and courteous. We expect our participants to be as well, even when they are children. If a child is not demonstrating this, the parent or guardian will be contacted immediately for the student to be picked up. Refunds will not be available for a family in this situation.
